This film is about a gang of 'Jet', a group of troubled Teens. Snapping his thumbs, they beat on their own, as they believe, street of Puerto Ricans. This gang of thugs and racists, who have no desire to work, lost youth, with the only passion of dance. This film about the stupidity of inter-racial struggle, that it will lead to nothing but a tragedy. Here and here, so pure innocent love between Tony and Maria, American and puertorikankoy, representatives of different bands over death, despair, and tragedy.
And, as always happens, the only death, only pain and the tears were able to stop the hostility. Understanding the futility of war, as always comes too late. It is impossible to do without the victims, because only it is sobering people and gives them the opportunity, finally, to think and doubt in the correctness of their actions and attitudes.
But whether it is worth looking for hidden meanings in this film? In musicals almost never is important story, so often they are put to already-written works. The musical is simply spectacular view, where ballet, music, singing, great choreography, bright decorations are mixed together and make viewers glued watch this beautiful show, in which often the rooms execute stars, idols million, for even more attracting the public.
Here and 'West side story' was no exception. Hollywood handsome Richard Beymer, with snow-white teeth and the smile playing modern Romeo - Tony, taken on a role only for commercial purposes, because all of the songs in it played Jim Bryant. It seemed to me not genuine and a fake one. Beauty Netali wood, the performer of the role of Mary, though, and looked more convincing, but she sang for her Marnie Nixon.
The only actress who in every episode brilliantly played, it is, in my opinion, Rita Moreno, she brother of Mary. She his every look, every movement has created exactly the image, which was needed for this role, and it required a strong, willful, beautiful, woman with a twinkle. Only in her game was really interesting to watch.
And when we find it interesting to watch a movie in principle? When we can imagine ourselves in the place of the hero. Can feel the whole story, live it together with him. But when you see these dances and songs, unrealistic scene, certainly can't identify with the character, and therefore can't come deep in the role, and the film, of course, does not work. It is impossible to imagine that when he saw a man, just tell him 'Love', it is impossible to imagine that killing someone, you are immediately stantsuesh dance, and then another and sing. It's all too theatrical, uninteresting, tight, and false.
But, dare I say, once again, not for the sake of ideas and the scene was filmed this movie, but for the sake of the spectacular views and the Director coped with this task. Stunningly beautiful shows the city, the courts, Playground, garage, it's all so bright, rich, as if drawn, beautiful costumes, dresses 60s.
In this film, each episode is perfect for the song, on the light. Night city beautiful lights, the colors do not lose their brightness. There is a very interesting ways of installation. For example the scene where Mary and Tonya in love with each other, she fabulous technically made.
Well and certainly, this film would not be as good, if not choreography Robbins is a spectacular combination of ballet, acrobatics, jazz and rock-n-roll.
